WHY MEDITATION.
Meditation is the act of turning over or revolving of a subject repeatedly in the mind” (The Webster Encyclopedia Dictionary). I would add that it represents a period of time when one sets aside about 30-45 minutes for reflection, relaxation thus reaching a state of elevated awareness, connecting with the heart and divine intelligence. This is usually contemplated when the pressures of daily living brings on stress, worry or anxiety upon our lives and we set about finding answers within ourselves that we are otherwise too busy to pin down and flush out from us.
THE RESULTS Meditation can lead to as much as 40% reduction in psychological distress, such as stress, anxiety and depression (David Lynch Foundation) I would add also that the benefits I receive from practicing meditation are, a greater peace of mind, a greater level of awareness of life, a greater appreciation of family and those in my business, a higher level of productivity, creativity and achievements.
I am a businessman, work gets’ pretty hectic and challenging most days. The responsibility of leading my staff, projects to start and complete on time, challenging clients to satisfy, comes with their fair share of added challenges and anxiety. In light of all this, it becomes very important to take care of my mental health and not jeopardize my physical health. Health is wealth they say so avoid sickness at all costs.
Meditation brings about manifestations of so many things such as, a heightened awareness of one’s ability to overcome obstacles., find new pathways, foster good partnerships, relationships and strengthens ones resolve to lead a better life going forward. It can also manifest tangible things that enhances ones’ life or lifestyle. It is a valuable tool to be used to pick yourself up, dust yourself off and continue leading a good life..
This is what I do to relieve the anxiety and stress of work, even the non-related ones and get me right back on track to accomplish much when otherwise I would be struggling with sacks of worry, stress and anxiety.
1 FIND A QUIET PLACE First, I find a secluded place such as the Botanical gardens, sometimes I find a spot at a bubbling spring in the hills, or even our guest bedroom at home when I’m alone or when everyone is asleep but any quiet place will do as long as you are not disturbed during the session.
2 PREPARE YOUR MIND AND BODY I assume a yoga like posture on the ground or floor or sit in a chair, close my eyes with my head slightly tilted upward, rest my hands on top of my thighs with my palms turned up. At this point, the way you breathe is very important. I slowly, steadily, take about five deep breaths until I feel the oxygen rich blood circulating through my brain and then appreciate that feeling of calmness that has come over me.
3 EXHALE AND RELEASE Now, relax your breathing to a normal rhythm and zero in on your feet, release all the tensions and relax them as if they were lifeless. Next, release the stress in your hands. Then release the tension in your head and then release the tensions in your stomach, your organs and the entire body. At this point your body should be lifeless and relieved of all tension.
4 RELAX. Now I Continue to relax my breathing to the sleeping level and quietly, in my mind, I reflect on all the events that led me to conduct this session. Be thankful for all the positives, embrace them, even smile at them. Then, identify the negatives and one by one for a while, release them into the atmosphere and let them go.
IN WITH THE POSITIVES. Now I breathe normally as if I am asleep and try not to let the negative thoughts slow me down or accelerate my breathing. I dismiss the negative, unimportant thoughts by countering them with positive ones and see myself rising above the negatives to a height where they cannot reach me. They will gradually disappear. Now my mind is ripe for the infusion of positive, uplifting, life changing ideas.
YOUR GOAL Achieving happiness is what our goal should be. After each session, I realize how important my health, positive state of mind and a successful attitude is to my overall well-being and true happiness.
COMPLETE THE PROCESS
A. BREATHE EASY Continue to breathe normally. Let your mind go back to your legs, arms, body and make sure that they are relaxed and lifeless. Controlling your breathing is very important. Some of the thoughts that enters your mind will decrease your breathing for a split second without you being aware of it. Others will tend to increase it. Watch the mood as the thoughts race through your mind and be sure you are properly relaxed.
B. FIND YOURSELF Now, find a positive reason for your existence in the space you occupy in life. Ask yourself what is my true purpose here, who am I, what are my obligations to myself, what do I want to be, am I on the journey to become that person, what are the duties I must perform to become that person. If all those questions have been answered in the affirmative, there will still be some hinderance or obstacles present.
As you breathe out, release all the negatives that are preventing you from being that ideal person, with every fresh breath you take in, invoke all the positive, practical things you will be doing to achieve those ideals and see yourself reaching your goals. If you haven’t found the answers and don’t know where to start, make a vow and promise yourself that you will do the necessary research to find the answers. Begin your journey of finding yourself and direction.
C. IDENTIFY WHERE THE TROUBLE IS Set your thoughts on finding other specific things happening in your life that are out of balance, identify where the trouble is and prescribe a treatment for them. Remember true happiness does not come from any other source but you. Everything that you will ever have, everything that you will ever do and everything that you will ever become comes from within you. At this point I can feel my enthusiasm rising. I am pumped and ready to go now that I have identified the issues and released from me their burdensome weight.
D. PULL OUT ALL THE STOPS Now rekindle the flame, get the fire and passion for love, truth, greatness, achievements, success going. Go over the mission statements of your life, pull out the blueprints in your heart that you had constructed for your life and follow through on their implementations. Follow the prescriptions for love, forgiveness, healing and promise yourself, make a vow to continue on life’s journey knocking down obstacles, capturing rewards towards the mark of success and go for what you want.
MANTRA MEDITATION
You can also choose to do mantra meditation. Mantra is a steady repetition or chant that is used to control our thoughts and feelings around a central idea. This invokes intentions based on the goals you have set and what you want to achieve in life. View the world as a beautiful place despite all that is happening around you and appreciate its’ beauty. This is the first step to purify and clean out your mind.
CONNECT WITH THE DIVINE.
Meditation brings insights and inspiration. During this time, entertain a positive outlook on life. Begin to see the world in a different light. Be in harmony with natures beauty, its’ rhythm and all the beautiful things it gives to you freely. Express gratitude, be thankful, appreciate its’ laws and abundance. Adopt its’ principles of perfection and multiplication.
RELEASE AND LET GO.
Release all hate from your mind and embrace love. Forgive others and forget their mistakes. Seek to be forgiven and bring closure to any feud, disagreements and misunderstandings. Identify areas that you can effectively serve others. Think about what you can do for others in ways that will benefit their lives and not just your own. One small act of kindness can go a far way in making a huge difference in the lives of those around you, both family and strangers.
MOVE ON
Focus on your main goals now. Asses yourself and see if you are pumped and ready to go. Ask yourself, what can I do this minute to get one step closer to achieving them. Don’t be hung up however so much on what you must do now but rather, focus on your passion, the dreams you have and figure out what you can do to be more fulfilled and enjoy life more.
BE INSPIRED
Now after all you just went through, Open your mind to new ideas. They will be popping up all over the place. Let your thoughts focus on things that excites you, things that inspire you, things that get your creative juices flowing. Re-kindle your lifelong passion, think about people you admire and especially those who are successful and follow them. Get back to your business with new enthusiasm and vitality like you’ve never known. Follow your dream.
